Oyster aquaculture cages provide fish habitat similar to natural structure with minimal differences based on farm location

چکیده

Oyster aquaculture gear may augment natural seafloor by providing structured habitat for economically important fish species. Underwater video census was used to assess abundance and community composition on eastern oyster ( Crassostrea virginica ) shelf bag style off-bottom cages within rock reef habitat. During 2018, underwater cameras were mounted four study at a dense shellfish farm of 40-100 commercial (dense cage farm), single interspersed low relief (sparse amongst boulders (rock reef), an embayment off Milford, Connecticut, which is part Long Island Sound, in the United States. In 2019, similarly deployed two per each three farms Norwalk Westport, CT. Video recorded hourly eight-minute segments from 7 am pm. Data loggers monitored seawater temperature, light intensity, current speed. Fish (MaxN) calculated all videos. We compared between May September, boulder habitat, sparse across locations. black sea bass Centropristis striata ), scup Stenotomus chrysops tautog Tautoga onitis significantly higher than boulders, regardless number. Cunner Tautogolabrus adspersus when sites grouped. However pairwise comparisons indicated that cunner versus but not different. Light intensity speed explained less variation relative relationships inconsistent habitats locations Our results suggest multi-tiered contribute structure environments provide temperate similar reefs.

Floodplain farm fields provide novel rearing habitat for Chinook salmon

When inundated by floodwaters, river floodplains provide critical habitat for many species of fish and wildlife, but many river valleys have been extensively leveed and floodplain wetlands drained for flood control and agriculture. In the Central Valley of California, USA, where less than 5% of floodplain wetland habitats remain, a critical conservation question is how can farmland occupying th...

Seagrass Meadows Provide 3D Habitat for Reef Fish

For large fishes, seagrass canopies typically provide a relatively flat habitat on seabeds, but seagrasses in the genus Posidonia can provide additional habitat complexity by forming organic-rich deposits known as mats. Erosional processes can scour channels through the mats, resulting in the formation of escarpments with caves. Here we report that reef fishes, such as groupers, inhabit the cav...

Flat and complex temperate reefs provide similar support for fish: Evidence for a unimodal species-habitat relationship

Structural complexity, a form of habitat heterogeneity, influences the structure and function of ecological communities, generally supporting increased species density, richness, and diversity. Recent research, however, suggests the most complex habitats may not harbor the highest density of individuals and number of species, especially in areas with elevated human influence. Understanding nuan...

Assessment of fish farm effluents on macroinvertebrates based on biological indices in Tajan River (north Iran)

Impacts of effluent from fish farming activities on fluvial ecosystems lead to deterioration of water quality and changes in the macroinvertebrates assemblage. In this study, the influence of fish farm effluents on water quality and macroinvertebrates communities of Tajan River was investigated to evaluate the suitability of macroinvertebrates based on biological metrics and indices. Benthic...

Can oysters control eutrophication in an integrated fish - oyster aquaculture system ?

Eutrophication is a serious problem occurring in ponds or estuaries where fish culture is practised. A possible solution to this problem is to raise oysters in an integrated culture with fish to improve water clarity and to help remove excess nutrients. In order to determine the effects that cultured oysters have on the environment, an experimental study was performed in the Moothakunnam region...
